Title:

Arab-Baluch Rug
Qainat Region East Persia (Iran)

Size:

37 ½ “x 45”

Circa:
1880
Cat. #:
343
Description:

This rug displays several traditional design and color features common to Arab-
Baluch’ and ‘Baluch’ weaving from the Qainat region.

The diminutive main border has the classic meandering floral motifs.

A nearly identical design is found on approximately 80% of the Arab-‘Baluch’
and ‘Baluch’ rugs from this region.

Multiple border stripes visually challenge the main border for the viewer’s
attention.

There are three stepped medallions on a vertical axis. Each of these medallions
has numerous extended ‘arms’. Within each medallion is a sectioned diamond.

The multiple border stripes, the stepped medallions with ‘arms’, and the
sectioned diamond motifs are all traditional design constructs.

The free flowing manner in which the weaver distributed the botehs
across the field contributes significantly to the spontaneity of the field
composition.

The ground color of both the field and border is a reddish-brown. A clear,
deeply saturated steel blue and a very limited use of ivory are the secondary or
accent hues.

All the colors are from natural sources.

Condition: The condition extremely good. The pile is full and nearly without
blemish. There are a couple of botehs with moderate oxidation. No repairs
have been made to the pile. There are no areas of wear or low pile.

Structure:
Warps:

Wool, natural shades of primarily ivory with some in shades of brown.

Wefts:

Wool, natural shades of brown. There are two wefts between each row of
knots.

Knots:

Asymmetrical inclined to the right

Sides:

Multiple foundation warps are bundled into two separate selvedge cords
and then the two cords are wrapped together as one large cord. The wrap
consists of goat or camel hair.

Ends:

The upper end consists of balanced plain weave. The bottom consists of warp loops. Warp loops are usually only 1 – 2 inches long. These are about 5 inches. This suggests that they encircled the loom beam itself. Warp loops seldom, if ever, appear at the upper end of a rug.

Handle:

The rug is moderately supple with a fairly heavy feel to it.

Price:
$950
Comment:

The Qainat region is a mountainous district running northwest by southeast.

The village of Gonabad is the principal town in the north and the village Birjand
is the commercial center of the southern range.

The population of this region is primarily Arab and to a lesser degree various
‘Baluch’ tribes and sub-groups.
