Title

Bergama Prayer Rug
West Anatolia

Size

3' 3’ x 3’10”

Circa 1875
Cat. No.

323

Description

The design elements, design configuration and colors of this prayer rug are very traditional.

Influences from this Bergama group are seen in certain Milas prayer rugs.

Distinguishing between the two based on design and color alone is difficult.

The Bergama attribution for this rug is based primarily on weave pattern and, to a lesser extent, its structure.

The rug has a limited yet well-coordinated palette.

The dyes are from all natural sources and are rich in substance.

Octagonal shapes in alternating colors of indigo blue and madder red display assertively on the saffron yellow ground.

A diamond form and hooked motif are seen within each octagon and hooked motifs also frame the octagons.

Consistent with the design heritage of this group, the borders are very wide.

The color and shape of the mihrah are also quite traditional.

The field has a pragmatic distribution of secondary elements, primarily hooks forms and highly stylized floral motifs

Condition: Good.  There are scattered repairs and reweaves. The pile is full with no wear or damage.

Structure

Wool, natural light brown.  The warps are generally on one level; however, there are areas with slight  warps displacement (depression).

Wool, dyed red.  There are two rows of wefts between each row of knots

Symmetrical.

A portion of the original weft-faced plain weave remains and is in good condition.

Very supple (cloth-like)

Comment

The rug has a rich, old, mellow countenance.  It makes an impressive wall hanging, especially when displayed by appropriate lighting.  I would not recommend use on the floor.
