There are very few rugs that can accurately be described as rare or unique.
This rug, because of its remarkable palette, is truly rare, perhaps unique.
Green is not frequently seen in Baluch work. When present, it is used sparingly and usually as a secondary accent tone.
In this rug, the color is used prominently in both the field and the borders.
The field color is an incredibly saturated steel blue.
Turkmen-style Ashik-guls are displayed on the diagonal.
The main body of each gul is a rich chocolate-aubergine.
Within each gul is a diamond motif in a clear, strong green.
Within that diamond is a smaller diamond; this one a brownish- red, a shade seen in some Turkmen tribal weaving.
Within that diamond is yet a smaller one; this time in brown.
Shades of aubergine, green and a brownish-red are utilized in the border.
The main border design consists of ‘S’ motifs, in the principal field colors.
White diagonal dots are effectively employed as accent motifs.
All the colors are derived from natural dye sources.
Condition: Most of the pile is in near perfect condition. There is no oxidation. There is, however, wear in the bottom one-fourth in the borders. The wear is to the pile only and not to the foundation. |
