Ferahan Rug
West Persia

Size 4'4" x 6'6"
Date 1900
Cat. No.

291

Description

Production of rugs on the Ferahan plain in the Ark district of central west Persia appears to have been of two types, a course, large, commercial grade carpet and small rugs, primarily high grade. This example is clearly the latter. This is a finely 'drawn' and carefully planned rug with smooth corner articulation and an excellent rendering of the tradition Ferahan central medallion. This medallion is displayed on a rich, glowing indigo field. Note the tiny cross motifs at the base of the arrowhead portions of the medallion. The colors are strong yet their mellow tonality creates a visually calming experience for the viewer.
