Central Anatolian Yastik
Konya Region

Size 22" x 40"
Date 1875
Cat. No.

289

Description

The principal field design is an unusual and minimalist variant of the kizilli quatrefoil medallion. This medallion and its innumerable variations are seen throughout Anatolian and even into Persia. It is interesting to note that the Central Anatolian kizilli form usually appears double stacked. Here, of course, there is only the single medallion. The palette suggests that this yastik was woven in an area Southwest of Konya. The design of the lappets re-enforces a Central Anatolian attribution. There is a strong sense of verticality to the composition. The use of sectioned flower heads, rather than a simple outline color, contributes to this feel. Although it does not reproduce clearly on most computer monitors, there is extensive use of a strong, rich aubergine. It is seen as a background color to the lappets and in the central medallion. All the dyes in this piece are produced from natural dye stuffs. The wool is thick and soft. The handle is meaty.

Condition: Excellent. The pile is full with no areas of wear. There is a small hole in the lower left selvedge.
