| Description |
Khamseh is an administrative district north of Hamadan. Historically, these villages produced a large quantity of rugs and their quality varied significantly. This rug represents the finest work of that area's weaving tradition. The colors are warm yet vibrant. They are from all natural dye stuffs and have considerable range. The field medallion, commonly called an anchor medallion, is a typical feature of many Khamseh rugs. Note how the border is skillfully rendered as is the variant of the 'herati' design. In Khamseh weaving one frequently finds a wide main border with prominent but smaller secondary borders. In this rug the borders, main and secondary, are of near equal proportions. The colors and skillful design execution suggest that this rug is a produce of the late 19th century.
