Title:
Shahsavan Bag Face
Northwest Persia
Size:
18" x 8"
Circa:
1900
Cat. #:
284
Description:

In western rug literature, the field design of this bag face is usually called either ‘repeat cross armed motif’ or small, stepped medallions on a diagonal repeat. The consensus is that it was derived from the gol motif.

The motif, although not truly rare, is less frequently seen than many others generally attributed to the Shahsavan tribes of northwest Persia and the Transcaucasia.

It is seen most often on flat weave weavings rather than pile.

There is some disagree on the attribution of this piece.

Tanavoli in Shahsavan attributed a mafrash panel (plate # 74) to the Shahsavan of the Hashtrud area.

Stanzer in book Kordi attributed a similar flat weave panel to Kurds of northeast Persia, either from the Lain or Khekestan regions (plate # 74).

Both opinions are those of thoughtful rug scholars with field experience in the regions about which they write.

Condition:  Very good.  There are small areas of high quality repair.

$1,800
