Description:

This primitive rug is formed by four narrow strips, not all the same length, joined together as one. Each strip was woven on a narrow, portable loom used by nomadic tribes of the region.

The field design consists of conjoined multi-colored diamonds on a vertical axis.

The dyes are of excellent quality and have aged well.  There are no dye runs.

The blue-green is probably indigo sulphonic.

There is use yak, goat or camel wool in both the foundation and portions of the field.

Condition: Most of the pile is full.  There are areas of pile loss, damage and minor wear.   No repairs have been made to the rug and it is presented in ‘as found’ condition.
Structure:

Warps:

The warps consist of a variety of materials.  Some consist of sheep’s wool while others are solely of either yak or camel hair. In some two different types are plied as one.

Wefts:
The same applies to the wefts.  Neither the warps nor the wefts  have been dyed.  Both are in shades of natural brown.  In some portions of the rug there are as many as ten wefts between rows of knots.

Knots:
Symmetrical.

Sides:
Portions of the original have been lost.  There is no bundling of the foundation warps.  Rather, in the original, the wefts are simply wrapped around foundation warps and returned horizontally across the body of the rug.  This technique is often referred to as a ‘weft selvedge’.

Ends:
The original ends have survived and are braided.
