Title

Baluch Rug
NE Persia, Khorasan Region

Size 3' x 5'11"
Date 1890 - 1910
Cat. No.

269

Description

This rug is a deceptively interesting one. One that would fit well into a focused collection of Baluch work. First, there are the wonderful shades of steel blue and chocolate-aubergine. These colors do not show well on a computer screen and their visual impact is nearly impossible to convey. Secondly, the entire composition, though simple, is balanced and well executed. Thirdly, and perhaps most interesting, is the possibility this rug may have been woven as a prayer rug. Note the arch at the top of the field area. One sees a definite break in the continuity of the repeat diamond field. This configuration suggests pre-commercial work and something that was woven for family use.

Condition: Good. Moderate oxidation of brown. One small hole in the right, bottom border ground. An approximately two inch tear is repaired on the right side.

Structure

Warps:
Wool, undyed ivory. Two strands. Z-spun, S-plied.

Wefts:
Wool, undyed dark brown. Two shoots.

Knots:
Symmetrical. Warps are rather substantially depressed.

Sides:
Two sets of warps are bundled and over-cast with wool and animal hair.

Ends:
Approximately two inches of the original plain weave kilim ends are intact. These are in simple shades or dark and middle-brown.
Comments The rug has a heavy, substantial feel or handle. This is due to the tight packing of the wefts and off-set warps. Note, also, the symmetrical knotting.
Price $975.00
