Shahsavan Bag,
NW Persia, Khamseh

Size 12' x 18"
Date 1880 - 1910
Cat. No. 258
Description

The olduz (star) is the most popular Shahsavan motif. It is found in most Shahsavan weaving, sometime in its original eight pointed form. At other times in a variety of modified forms. In this example, we see a field design consisting of a varient of the repeating crab-shaped stars (Tanavoli). The main border is composed of stylized floral or flower buds with connecting arms. These are displayed on a solid white ground. Variants of the simplified dragon motif, yellow on brown, constitute the guard striped. This diminutive bag displays an impressive range of strong colors, all from natural sources. They include yellow, light green, sky blue, indigo, yellow and light red. The attention to detail and skill of execution suggests the work of an experienced weaver.

Condition: The face of the bag is in near perfect condition. There is wear along the sides and in the lower corners.

Price $950.00
