The central field construct is what Tanavoli* calls ‘opposed designs’.
One can also view it as a ‘reflective design’ technique.
Whatever one calls it, it is a common design characteristic in Islamic art. It appears in a variety of textiles and woven art.
In the application of this technique, the two halves are identical but reversed, that is, the right matches the left or the top matches the bottom.
In this example, the central field motif is a four sided reflection of the ‘flower and bud’ (chickak lameh) design.
The left matches the right, the top matches the bottom.
The ‘flower and bud’ design is a traditional element of the Shahsavan weaving heritage.
This specific configuration of the design is extremely rare.
The colors are from all natural dyes with good range and deep saturation.
The corner and secondary motifs introduce an asymmetric, tribal quality to the entire field composition.
