| Description |
The medallion
on this bag face is commonly associated with Baseri, a Khamseh
sub-group. It is, however, often seen in Afshar work and,
less frequently, in Qashqa'i examples. I believe it to be
Khamseh. The over-all composition displays primitively drawn
design motifs common to various South Persian tribal groups.
The colors are outstanding, very well saturated and clear.
Condition:
Good. There are a couple of isolated areas of moth damage.
The pile is otherwise full with no holes, wear creases or
foundation damage.

Comments:
|
One might
attribute this weaving to the Qashqa'i. The dark red
wefts and strong color suggest Qashqa'i. However, the
warps are not as deeply depressed as one might see in
Qashqa'i work. The foundation fibers are not as finely
spun as those appearing in Qashqa'i weaving. The rather
primitive design execution also suggests Khamseh of
late 19th - early 20th century vintage.
