| Description |
It is
well known among collectors and specialty dealers that Afshar
prayer rugs are very rare. When evaluating these rugs, one
should, however, distinguish between Afshar prayer rugs of
tribal origin from those produced in village workshops.
Only those of tribal origin are truly authentic ethnographically.
The tribal prayer rug is small. The smaller size comports
with easy portability. Structurally, the foundation of the
tribal prayer rug has wool warps and wefts. The knots are
symmetrical. The design composition of the tribal piece is
more rustic, the workshop example more formal.
Condition:
Good. There is low even pile wear. There is no moth damage.
The dyes are all natural.

Comments:
|
The symmetrical
knotting, wool foundation and tonality confirm that
this rug was woven in the tribal rather than workshop
setting. The diminutive size and the purposeful change
in the directionality of the field diagonals strongly
suggest that this piece is a rare Afshar prayer rug
of tribal origin.
