Description

The attribution here is tentative for this rug represents what some believe might be a very specific and as yet unidentified group of work having both Afshar and Bakhtiyari origin. The rug bears the date of 1312 AH (1896 AD) and the inscription for what the Persians call “the five closest to god”, the names of Mohammed and his family. The red and orange wefting and the tonality of the weaving suggest an Afshar work. Yet, the field composition contains elements of the traditional Bakhtiyari vase design but the whimsical treatment of these elements result in a charming and imaginative example of tribal folk art.
